With summer in full swing, the outdoor celebrations will soon begin. Picnics and cookouts are soon to be making people all across the nation smile.
With that being said, dental implant providers Drs. Richard and Brent Assing, along with the rest of their staff here at Brandon Complete Dental Care have decided to write an article about summer food.
Today we’re going to tell you a bit about which summertime staples you might want to avoid and what to replace them with for a smile friendly season.
Let’s take a closer look.
The hot months of summer have quite a few staple foods that are always present at nearly ever seasonal event. For many people, this can mean frequent exposure to numerous items that aren’t very good for your oral health.
We have taken the liberty of listing a few of them here along with the reasons for their unhealthy nature.
Hot Dogs, Bologna, and Bacon
This first item may not come as a shock to many people, as the majority of people know that hot dogs aren’t the healthiest things on the planet. However, what may surprise them is the fact that, aside from being bad for your waistline, they can also pose a threat to the health of your smile.
Because of something called processed saturated fat.
Hot dogs are loaded with it, and this particular fat can cause inflammation in your body. What does inflammation have to do with your mouth?
More than you might think.
Inflammation directly affects the intricate web of veins that supply your gum tissue with the life-giving blood and oxygen they need to thrive. Your gum tissue also happens to be one of the main components, aside from your jaw bone, that is holding your dental implants in place. When they become inflamed gum disease can be the result.
A hot dog every now and then or bacon with breakfast isn’t a bad thing. However, if you are looking to take care of your smile this summer we recommend trying to stick to unprocessed meats and keeping your hot dog consumption in check.
One thing that can make sticking to healthier options difficult is all the food that is offered at summer events. Trays and trays of appetizers can make or break healthy choices during your day, and let’s face it, we all love food.
However, instead of battling the appetizers, why not put a healthy spin on them and bring something new to the table? Check out this recipe for Grilled Squash Ribbons We found on foodandwine.com.

We hope this post has given you some smile friendly inspiration for the summer. Now get outside and enjoy the season before it passes us by! Just don’t forget the sunscreen.
Until next time readers, keep smiling.
